I bought this for the 2016 holiday season and re-read it for Christmas, 2017. I plan to make it a holiday tradition at my house. Winterson's sheer childlike delight in the season shines through fiction and nonfiction alike. The recipes are personal and interesting. An altogether delicious read.
Get it and read a few of these stories every Christmas. They are interesting and fun and thought-provoking - not cheesy holiday sentiment or trite exploration of the same old stuff. Smart, well-written but somehow also feel like classic stories. And the recipes are fun too! Get one for yourself and a few to give as gifts to the smart people in your life who also still love (or want to love) Christmas.
Exactly what I needed during the week before Christmas. Learned some new trivia about Christmas, have some new recipes to try and was treated to a wide range of stories including a couple good ghost stories. Granted, I am a huge Jeanette Winterson fan and think everything she does is gold because, well, it is.
Every December I always try to find a good Christmassy to read, but often find it hard to find something that's just right. Discovering that Jeanette Winterson, an author that I had loved as a high schooler, had written this book gave me a little hope, and the more I read the happier I was. There's truly something for everyone here, and miraculously she manages to invoke the spirit of Christmas without invoking cliches, and even her weakest stories are elevated by her style. Whether you want a charming story for your kids, a spooky ghost story, or a tale of the healing and hurting power of this time of year, you'll find your cup of cocoa...and the recipes sound wonderful too. I'll definitely be trying them next year.

I like to read a holiday book every year. But it's hard to find something that's not too Hallmarky. So many contemporary Christmas stories are often saccharine romances (sometimes self-published and full of grammatical errors...). I wanted something a little more meaty and literary. And was delighted to stumble upon this collection by a long-time favorite, most-innovative writer. There are mysteries here, sweet stories, funny stories, pithy stories, heart-breaking stories, ghost stories, and yes, even romances. My husband and I enjoyed reading them aloud to each other (and to our senior parents). Some stories we even read twice. The fictional stories are peppered with real life culinary stories and recipes. Making for a quirky and charming holiday book unlike so many others out there.
I've had a rough 2016 and was looking for something "light" to read, having lost both of my parents within a month of each other. I have to say, I got completely lost in this book. The writer has some very interesting stories, and loved the entire tone of the book. Easy, light read, but also manages to teach you a few lessons. Looking forward to reading more by this author.
