I absolutely loved this book in the first 150-200 pages, and felt it held so much promise. But as it wore on (and it's 50 pages too long), my enjoyment diminished as I began to notice its many faults.

In the second half, there is way too much detail about historical figures who really don't need to have been featured so prominently. In addition, there are too many historical characters introduced - so many that the book gives us a list of them before the book begins, but it's not detailed enough to provide much help. An out-of-place sex scene is jarring as it seems uncharacteristic of the characters and time period; and the romantic union happens "off camera" and we are merely told about it in the present-day portion of the novel.

The present-day story is even more problematic (if you can get past the present-tense writing which was jarring in places). The most glaring problems include the story of the present-day murder, who commits the murder, and then the ridiculous memorial service for the murder victim - there are parts that just left me scratching my head. The present-day romance is also quite unconvincing - where is the passion? (I have not read earlier novel with these characters).

I do think this author has quite a bit of talent, based on how excited I was about this book in the first half, but she needed an editor with a much heavier hand - particularly in the second half of the book.

This is the sequel to The Rossetti Letter. Clare Donovan is beginning her teaching position at Cambridge. Things are a little rocky to start with and she finds herself at odds with several of the faculty, one of whom is a friend of Andrew Kent's former girlfriend and the other is a brilliant historian and also a lady's man, Derek Goodman. She is also confused by Andrew's distant demeanor, especially after their experiences in Venice. When she finds a cryptic diary, and plans a research project, she discovers that Derek has lied to her and is trying to scoop her project. When Derek is found dead, she and Andrew join forces to try to determine who killed him. I found this one to be a little more uneven than the first book, but I really enjoyed the descriptions of her life at Cambridge and its environs. Interspersed is the story of the woman who wrote the diary, Hannah Devlin, a 17th century physician involved with a mystery in the King's Court. Overall, I found it to be a good, but not great book.
The Devlin Diary picks up where The Rossetti Letter left off. The story bounces between Claire Donavan, a modern scholar in Cambridge, and Hannah Devlin, an unlicensed doctor in 17th century London. Both women confront danger, prejudice, and mystery involving the powerful and unscrupulous. The historical research is superb, rendering the 17th century characters, settings, plots, politics, professions, science, morals, mind-sets, and details far more intriguing than the current ones, but both time periods held my interest. Until the last chapters, I was unsure of how either story would end but found both conclusions very satisfying. Highly recommended.
The Devlin Diary is an outstanding historical mystery that will keep you on the edge of your seat. The book is a real page turner and you will not be disappointed. The book alternates between 17th century London and present day Cambridge and follows the story of two university fellows trying to solve the mystery surrounding the death of an English princess. This book is the follow up to Christi Phillip's first novel The Rossetti Letter, and once again historians Claire and Andrew use their amazing research abilities to solve a mystery forgotten by the passage of time. I loved Ms Phillip's first novel, but this one is even more engrossing. I could not put it down and really enjoyed both the 17th century and present day stories.

Christi Phillips is an amazing author and I highly recommend this book, as well as, her first novel too. Buy this book....you will not be disappointed!!!!
I truly loved Phillips first book, the Rossetti Letter. It took me a while to get into it but it was a very engaging read. I only have one question WHY would the writer change her writing style in her second novel, if she was so successful in her first novel? In this book she writes the historical period parts the main character's voice in the third person. I know there are many writers who use this style but at least for me; honestly, it was like reading a script or a play. I could not connect with the main characters or immerse myself in the story. I started to race and skip pages. In fact after the first 200 pages I began reading only the present day drama of the story and skipping completing the historical storyline because I truly did not care about the main plot. Yet I still found the present time sub-plot of Claire and Andrew entertaining. I hope the author goes back to her original writing style.
